Q.22  I have been E-Mailed files with a .arq extension which are supposed to be for Quilt Pro 4. I am unable to open these files with Quilt Pro 4 even though I have been advised that others who receive the files can. What can I do to open the files?
Q.23  I installed the update today and for some reason the icon no longer works. What do I do?

Q.1  The installation program says I have an invalid serial number but I have entered it exactly as shown. What is wrong?

A.1  Have you added some text to the Company box? It is necessary to add some text, such as Home, to the text box. If you have problems with the serial number use this information to make installation easier.

When you type in your serial number "QPW0400-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX", keep the following in mind:

-Do not use the caps key, let the installer capitalize the letters.
-Be sure to use zeros instead of the letter 0.
-Use all the dashes as shown and do not add spaces between the numbers.
-Do not include the quotes shown above.

Note: If you bought an upgrade version, you MUST have the previous version of Quilt Pro installed on your hard drive in order to install version 4. During installation of version 4, you will be given an upgrade code in case you need to reinstall for any reason. Write this code down next to your Version 4 serial number. You may uninstall the previous version after installing version 4.

Q.2  I am having difficulty coloring the background of Mariner's Compass blocks in Quilt Pro 4. It all colors as one large block, covering up the compass.

A.2  Go into File Preferences and under painting mode choose fast repaints. Click save and OK. Then try again.

Q.3  In the quilt layout menu if I lay out 8 inch blocks 3 across and 4 down my quilt should measure 24X32. The quilt measurement is coming up as 26X34. Why does this happen?

A.3  It sounds like you may have a 1 inch border or a 1 inch medallion ring around the blocks, which would add 2 inches to the quilt size. If the quilt has any other options in use ( such as borders, medallion rings, or sashing) and they appear in the quilt preview, the size of that option is taken into consideration when calculating quilt size. That can occur even if that setting was used and saved in a prior quilt layout set up. Pressing the save button, in the layout screen, saves all the settings in the quilt layout for use in another quilt layout. ( However, it does not save the quilt itself.)

To delete the extra setting, click on the option in the preview, the program will take you to where the option is located. You can delete it from the quilt layout.

Q.4  When I open a quilt project that I'd previously worked on, the fabric palette I used doesn't open with the quilt. How can I find out which palette I used?

A.4  If it hasn't been long since you last used the quilt project, you may be able to right click the current fabric palette and locate the palette you used previously by looking under Open Recent Palettes.

If it's an older project and you used many other palettes since then, the name of fabric can be found by using the yardage calculation function. The name will be shown like this: BaliFabs\Desert Mirage\MG1-55.BMP......from here you can find the fabric palette used. In this case it would have been Balifabs - Desert Mirage palette. The palette names are based on the manufacturer and the collection name.

To use a fabric that is already in the quilt in another part of the quilt without opening the palette, use the Color Picker tool. It's the one that looks like an eye dropper. What you do is, select the Color Picker, click on the color you need from the quilt. As soon as you do that the color picker will change to a paint brush. You can then use the fabric in a border, to use your example.

In the future, you can add the name of the fabric palette, in the Notes section of the program, if it makes it easier to find. The notes will stay with the quilt and blocks. This will be more important when you begin to create your own fabric palettes.

Q.5  The quilt I'm planning is set on point and I have been unable to set the sashing on the diagonal.

A.5  What you need is a diagonal setting, not the on-point setting. The diagonal setting will allow you to add sashing on the diagonal.

Q.6  When I try and save a block I have created in Quilt Pro version 4, I get an error message saying Permission DeniedOpen
Error. What does this mean?

A.6  The error message indicates that the location that you are saving to can not accept files, which in most cases would be a CD drive. Check to be sure that the folder you are using to save to is on the hard drive and not the CD drive.

Q.7  Will Quilt-Pro 4 run on a Windows XP Home Edition system?

A.7  Yes Quilt Pro 4 will run on Windows XP.

Q.8  Where can I find the serial number?

A.8  Look on the back of the User's Guide for the serial number.

Q.9  When in Quilt Wizard the bottom of the wizard can not be seen and I can not use the buttons for save, create quilt etc. I have tried moving the wizard up but it will not go up. What can I do?

A.9  What is your screen resolution set for in the Display Properties of your Control Panel? The minimum requirements are to set the screen resolution at 800 X 600 so that all the dialog boxes can be seen on the screen. It's possible that your computer is set for 600 X 480 and that makes the dialog boxes too large for the screen.

To check the resolution, go to the Control Panel, double-click on Display Properties icon. When the dialog box opens, click the Settings tab. On the lower right hand corner is the screen resolution setting. Move the slider bar to the right to increase the resolution.

Q.10  When I installed the version 4 update I wanted it to replace version 3 but it did not. They are both separate in my computer and I can't figure out how to merge them. Can you help?

A.10  You'll have to uninstall and then reinstall the program into the Version 3 folder by changing the installation destination to:

C:\Program Files\QuiltPro3 or the actual path, if different.

Q.11  If I click Want more blocks in the help menu I get an error that says "The page cannot be found."  Where are the new blocks?

A.11 This area is being worked on and we hope to have something soon.

Q.12  When using Quilt Info, some of the text doesn't print. I changed the margin sizes and then printed and neither fixed the problem.

A.12  Is it the right edge that is missing about 1/2" of text? If so, it's been reported to the programmer and we hope to get an update soon.   As a workaround, if your printer has a scaling feature that will allow you to print at 95% of actual size. Just be sure to return to actual size when you print templates.

Q.13  I just purchased Quilt Pro 4, while trying to open blocks from Windows Explorer, I get an error message "can't find qp95.exe". Am I not supposed to open blocks from Windows Explorer??

A.13 Actually no. All blocks should be opened from inside Quilt Pro using file/browse/blocks or File/open/blocks.

Q.14 The letters on the templates do not match up with the letters in the rotary charts.  Why is that?

A.14  I'm not sure they were meant to match up because we assume that if the user was going to print the rotary charts that they would not use templates. But if you are preparing lessons for use by others, I can see where you might want to have both.

With the templates you do have the ability to change the template lettering, in the template wizard, so that they match up with the rotary chart. I'd print the Rotary Chart first, then print the templates and make sure the letters match.

Q.15  I'm trying to create a quilt with alternating blocks but when I add my block it appears in all blocks rather than alternating ones.

A.15  With the quilt on your screen, right click on the block and from the pop up menu choose - Block settings and then choose Alternate. Now you can drop in the second block.  This same setting is on the Layout Tab of the Quilt Wizard.

Q.16  I created a sampler quilt with three different blocks in various positions including sashing and borders. When I print the rotary charts the program spits out 45+ pages. It seems that the program is creating a chart for each block. Why doesn't it combine the blocks that are the same?

A.16  The program is creating a separate page for each block because the block setting was set to sampler. What that means to the program is that each block is separate unit from the others. That includes the triangles on the sides of the blocks in diagonal settings. The printout also includes, the cutting instructions for the borders and sashing and the cornerstones for each.

When you use the sampler setting, the program has no way to tell that some blocks are actually duplicates. So in order to avoid printing all the extra pages, double click on one block and when it opens into it's own window, print the rotary charts for that block. Then manually multiply the number of patches needed for one block times the number of blocks in the quilt.

You should be able to print a chart for one block directly from the quilt, but we learned a few days ago that the program is printing all the block info even if you select just one block. We hope to have a fix for that problem soon.

Q.17 When I print templates for the Card Trick block, the dotted lines are askew. And if I want to print a rotary chart for this block, the program crashes.

A.17 There is a drawing error with this block. Download the corrected copy by clicking here.

Q.18 When I'm done with a quilt design, it would be nice to be able to turn off the grid and get a truer idea of the finished product because the black lines running thru the blocks tend to detract from the image. Can I do that?

A.18 You can remove the lines from view by:

  1. Selecting the entire quilt, choose Options from the menu and select Pen and Brush settings.
  2. Then in the dialog box, Choose Pen Type Null, and
  3. Select "Selected Objects only" and "Change Pen" but be sure to unselect "Change Brush" or the quilt will change colors.
  4. Then click Apply and OK.

Q.19 I'm following the directions in the Quilt Pro Assistant to Select Multiple Patches but it doesn't work. What Am I doing wrong?

A.19 Nothing. It seems that the instructions are missing a step. Here is how you do it:
To Select Multiple Patches

  1. Click the mouse button on the Select tool. The cursor becomes a white arrow.
  2. Press and hold the Shift key on the keyboard.
  3. Click the mouse on the patches you want to select.
  4. Quilt-Pro draws a select box around all the patches.
  5. Release the Shift key.

Q.20 When I attempt to drop a block into a quilt, I get the message: "File not same type as patch clicked on - Quilt Pro can't use it here". What is wrong?

A.20 The error is caused by clicking the Close button ( the X button) to close the window then saving the block when prompted by the program. We just found this error and we are working to correct it. In the meantime, always use File/Save (or Save As) menu before attempting to close the window. Once the block is saved, you may close.

Here is what to do to recover the blocks that generate this error message:

  1. Open the original block.
  2. Go to Edit menu and choose Select All.
  3. Go to Edit menu and choose Copy.
  4. Then click on the File-New-Block menu. You will get a new blank window.
  5. Click on Edit and choose Paste. The block will appear in the new window.
  6. Go to File menu and click on Save As and give the block a new name.
  7. Close the block and try to put this new block into your quilt. It should work fine.

Q.21 I downloaded several fabrics from a website. When I tried to make a new palette, or through the fabric browser, the bitmaps are all plain white. Yet, when I look at the in the folder through Explorer, they are all there fine. I am using Windows XP if that makes a difference. What happened?

A.21 We have had that problem reported by a few XP users but we haven't been able to recreate the problem using our own XP systems. However, we do know what you can do to correct the fabric images. Open each fabric file with Window's Paint program. You can find the program in the Accessories area. Once the file is open, use File/Save As to resave the image in the proper format. You can over write the original file. Once that is done to all the images you downloaded, they should work fine.

Q.22 I have been E-Mailed files with a .arq extension which are supposed to be for Quilt Pro 4. I am unable to open these files with Quilt Pro 4 even though I have been advised that others who receive the files can. What can I do to open the files?

A.22 It seems that when you send packet files over email, the receiving end email program makes the packet file a read-only file and you can't open it. However, once you change the files attributes, you will be able to. Here is how to do it:

Locate the file(s) on your hard drive using Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer), right click on the packet file, and choose properties from the right click menu. When the file properties window appears, you will see the section on "attributes". One or more of the options will be checked. Click the checked option to remove the checkmark, then click ok. Now try to open the packet using Quilt Pro's File/Open/Packet menu. It should open correctly.

In addition, if your version of Quilt Pro is 4.3 or earlier please update to the current version. This problem has been corrected in version 4.4.
Click here to go to the updates page.

Q.23 I installed the update today and for some reason the icon no longer works. What do I do?

A.22 To create a new icon, start with all programs closed and the desktop showing.

  1. From the Windows Start button, select Find.
  2. From the fly out menu, select Files or Folders. The Find Files dialog box appears.
  3. In the Named box, type in Quiltpro4.exe and select the drive where Quilt Pro is installed. (the default installation for Quilt Pro is in the C drive. ) If you are using Quilt Pro from the CD then choose the CD drive letter.
  4. Click the Find Now button. The search will locate the QuiltPro4.exe application file.
  5. Click the file with your right mouse button and a pop-up menu will appear.
  6. Click Create Shortcut here. A message will appear that says "Windows cannot create a shortcut here. Would you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  7. Click YES.
  8. The shortcut appears on your desktop.
  9. Double click the icon to start the program.
